The Sound of Plaid - 2012.01.19 - THEME: Outsider Music On this episode we explore the "so bad it's good" world of Outsider Music. We play plenty of outside music regularly enough that I'm surprised we haven't dedicated a whole show to it previously. From postman Shooby Taylor's strange scatting to William Shatner's over-dramatic spoken singing, sometimes unpolished music is golden. Music played: Johnny Tyler and the Riders of the Rio Grade, Sam Sacks, Eddie Osbourne, Sam Chalpin, Bingo Gazingo, Captain Beefheart, Legendary Stardust Cowboy, Lucia Pamela, Jack Mudurian, Nut Lady, Tony Mason-Cox, William Shatner, Phyllis Diller, Herve Villechez, Mr. T, Senator Sam J. Ervin Jr., Crispin Glover, Shooby Taylor, Wesley Willis, Jandek, Luie Luie, The Shaggs, Mic In Tracks (aka Napster Nuggets), Langley Schools Music Project, Komar and Melamid with Dave Soldier, Eilert Pilarm, and The Ypsilanti All-Starz... The Sound of Plaid - 2011.12.15 - WeirdCast Somewhen in the early days of Shoutcast (1998?) I was thrilled about the idea but didn't have the content. Thus was born WeirdCast... or was it StrangeCast? I can't remember, but it was a spontaneous perpetual broadcast shuffling together a duo of vocal samples with instrumental/non-vocal samples. The combo still works! There's something strangely intentional in its randomness. Listen for yourself... The Sound of Plaid - 2011.12.15 ...
The Sound of Plaid - 2011.12.08 - During Which We Bend Time It's a simple studio trick -- slow down the tape recorder, record lyrics, speed it back up, and voila -- The Chipmunks were born. The Sound of Plaid - 2011.11.10 - Bruce Haack Before Moog sold his first synthesizer, Bruce Haack was making his reputation as a pioneer of electronic music through the unlikely outlet of children's music. Collaborations with children's dance instructor Esther Nelson produced numerous albums through the 60's and 70's through their own tiny record label Dimension 5. Though Haack died in 1988, his work and legend started growing a decade later and now even his unreleased albums have been released posthumously. Most of this episode's music is by Bruce Haack and Esther Nelson; there are also tracks from Dick Hyman, BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Beck, Tipsy, and Danielson Familie...
